Rehabilitation, education, empowerment and inclusion of people with neurological disabilities in India’s rural/ urban community.
Work and Achievements
Vidya Sagar is a Chennai based, 32 year old organization, founded by Mrs Poonam Natarajan, as she found no services for her son Ishwar, who had profound mental and physical disability. She started with three children.
Today, from a building custom built to suit its needs, and with a staff of about 106, comprising Special Educators, physio, speech and occupation therapists, medical social workers, a small admin staff and support staff, VS serves over 4000 persons with multiple disability in a given year, whatever the degree of disability. We take pride in the fact that we have never refused services for want of money. Our beneficiaries are from all over India and from neighbouring countries.
VS gets involved in every aspect of disability – law, policy, creating awareness, accessibility, education, inclusion, rehabilitation, employment, etc. and is known for rendering highest quality service with tender loving care.
VS has just got land from the Govt of Tamil Nadu and wants to build a very forward-looking, replicable model of an Inclusive and Assisted Living project on this land. Work-places for persons with disability who cannot commute to work, income-generating, inclusive facilities, which also double-up as training and employment places, and several capacity-building and training programmes, an institute to train professional care-givers, etc. We also plan to develop an expert team that can travel to special needs person’s homes and equip and adapt them so that they can live independently within the community.
Parents as also adults with disability are eagerly looking forward to this facility, which we hope to complete within three years with active support and involvement from you all, the community. Thanks!
