Our Mission

To create models that generate sustainable livelihoods in large numbers

Work and Achievements

Development Alternatives (DA) is a not-for-profit organisation established in 1982. We are determined to build a world where every citizen can live a secure, healthy and fulfilling life, in harmony with nature. Through projects in women empowerment, skills & livelihood, sustainable habitat, renewable energy and natural resource management, we have directly impacted 15 million lives including women and youth, in the last 35 years.

Literacy to Self-Reliance
There are 180 million illiterate women in India. Through our innovative initiative “Literacy to Self- Reliance”, using ICT based TARA Akshar+ programme, we help women learn to read, write and do basic arithmetic in 56 days of classroom learning, followed by 6 months of vocational training. In the last decade, over 2,00,000 women have been benefitted across 8 states.
Women trained by DA have motivated their families and communities to overcome social injustice and poverty. Many women have set up their own enterprises further providing job opportunities to others. Some have also become Sarpanches, Ward Members and Gram Pradhans, and have been actively contributing to village development. This has been possible with generous support from various institutions, corporates, civil society and individuals who enabled us to empower millions of lives and communities across the nation.

We are committed to make 1,00,000 women literate in the next two years. A sum of INR 10,000 will make a woman literate and self-sufficient for life.
