Retinoblastoma is the most common eye cancer in children and mostly affects children less than 5 years of age. If detected and treated on time, this cancer is completely curable and more that 95% children can be saved and if untreated, it causes blindness, and ultimately death of its victim. It is sad but hard fact that although an effective treatment is available, still about 50% of children succumb to this eye cancer every year in India as many patients cannot afford the treatment. The Eye Cancer treatment centre at Dr Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital has treated more than 400 children with retinoblastoma, a majority of them free of cost.
Last year from the funds raised from Airtel Delhi Marathon we are in the process of setting up a new radiation treatment facility (Brachy-therapy) for this cancer and were also able to treat about 50 poor children with this eye cancer. The funding also helped us to provide state of the art but highly expensive treatment facility of intra –arterial chemotherapy to some of these children at an affordable cost and save their eyes. Funds raised from this marathon event will help us to continue our fight and save many children from succumbing to retinoblastoma by providing intra-arterial chemotherapy and setting up a radiofrequency surgical unit for these patients.
Please donate and support Me and Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital team as we run the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon to raise funds to help these unfortunate children suffering from retinoblastoma.
Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital is working towards eradication of avoidable blindness and deafness since 1914 with special focus on underprivileged section of society.
