APSA empowers urban slum communities towards social transformation through education, awareness, skill training & livelihoods.
Work and Achievements
APSA works with urban poor slums in 4 thematic areas – child rights, gender rights, youth empowerment and alcohol and substance abuse prevention – with priority for the girl child, through 20+ institutional and community outreachprojects, including the non-formal Dream School, Nammane Open Shelter for children needing care and protection, Navajeevana Nilayaworking hostel for young women trainees into their first jobs, Kaushalya that provides skill training to disadvantaged youth and the 24x7 Childline for children in distress. APSA is one of few NGOs in the state to work on child trafficking and the KishoriKanasu project at the Suraksha Open Shelter in Kanakpura provides protection and support for adolescent girl survivors of trafficking.
At community level, APSA forms and mentors SHGs, provides lifeskills and citizenship orientation to children, supports enrolment and retention of particularly girl children in govt. schools and collectivizes children and young people, domestic and migrant construction workers to lobby duty-bearers on their rights and access govt. welfare and benefits.
At policy level, APSA lobbies state and national government on pro-people and child policies and sits on various state and national committees and CSO networks. APSA was a key member of the drafting committee which saw formation of the Karnataka Child Protection Policy in 2016. The organization has been the recipient of numerous awards for its pioneering work on child rights.
