After a hard day at work or an exhausting day at school, all of us look forward to returning to that safe place that we call home. A place of safety and comfort. Imagine that one day, you go back to find it all gone. Swept away in a flood or utterly destroyed in an earthquake. Imagine what it would be like to have no home at all. That is the harsh reality for over 10 million people in our country – over 10 million people without roofs over their heads, without walls to protect them from danger.
Habitat for Humanity - as the name itself suggests is an organization with a vision to give these people a home, thereby giving them hope for a better life. They have already bettered the lives of 319,375 families by giving the access to shelter and have served 940,430 individuals in the year 2017 alone. They work to provide not just housing, but build toilets for people with no access to them and raise awareness about the importance of sanitation and hygiene.
They plan to reach out at least 60 million people without shelter by 2022. It is a big number, but with a little bit of your help, the goal is definitely within reach.
Born with all privileges in my life, I cannot ever imagine not having a home to go back to. Nor can I imagine other people without the very basic necessity of shelter and hygiene, how hard it must be for them to get through every single day of their lives.
Being able to contribute to the cause of shelter for everyone through Habitat for Humanity and knowing I am doing something to help these people makes this world a happier place for me.
Habitat for Humanity India is a non-profit organization that builds homes and provides housing-related services to low-income, marginalized families across India
